The concept of discipline has been surrounded with a lot of opinions nowadays. However, the truth that discipline is still crucial to a child’s overall development remains.
As a non profit organization in Chicago, Illinois, My Excellency recognizes that the Bible is positively influential and value-laden for every aspect of life. When it comes to disciplining our children, we believe that biblical principles are still relevant in every generation.
If you’re learning about helpful ways to discipline your child, consider the biblical perspective. Here are important elements of biblical discipline.
- Discipline Deters Destruction
In Hebrews 12:4-11, we learn about discipline being a painful process. And yet, at the end of it will be great reward. Parents know that disciplining their children is never easy, and it can be as painful to the parents as well. However, it’s important to remember that these disciplines are intended to steer them away from destructive choices in life. In this way, your discipline is in fact a display of your love.
- Discipline Involves Action and Words
In Proverbs 3:11, the writer talks about discipline that is not only about rebuking the wrong, but also implementing disciplinary actions. As we discipline our children, warnings are not enough to show them the intensity of their disobedience. There should also be an agreed consequence that is equivalent to the amount of their wrong.
- Discipline Should be Motivated by Love
At our Christian based school, we always remind our learners about the love of God. This is the same love we base biblical disciplines in. Hebrews 12:6-9 describes to us how God disciplines his people, and that He did it because of His great love for them. When you discipline your child, do so because you love them. For this reason, it’s important to hug your child afterwards and explain to them why they were disciplined in such a way.
- Discipline Intends to Build Obedience
As parents, we don’t only want our children to pursue academic excellence in Illinois. We also desire for them to be obedient individuals who are respectful of authority. We discipline our children so they will know what is right and do things for the right reasons. When they have a solid foundation of obedience, they can also develop self-discipline in other aspect of their lives later on. They can be productive members of the society as adults.
- Discipline Always Yields Results
Referring again to Hebrews 12:10-11, we find that discipline has long-term results when done in the right and loving way. It may be difficult to see yet when they are still children. But always trust that one day, they will look back to all your discipline and thank you for it.
Let these biblical perspectives on discipline inspire you to nurture your child in the ever loving way that you can.
